Teeth Cleaning and Preventative Dentistry in Houston
A teeth cleaning removes the plaque and hardened tartar a toothbrush cannot reach, paired with an exam that catches decay and gum problems early. At Snow Tree Dental in Houston's Galleria area, a typical visit includes cleaning, polishing, a gum check, and X-rays when needed. Most adults are seen about every six months; your dentist will advise what fits you.
What preventative dentistry covers
Preventative dentistry is the routine work that keeps you out of the chair for bigger things. Cleanings, exams, X-rays, fluoride, and sealants all fall under it. The goal is simple: find small problems before they turn into root canals or extractions, and keep your gums healthy enough to hold your teeth in place for the long run.
Most of the cleaning is done by a hygienist. Plaque hardens into tartar within days, and once it does, brushing will not remove it. It has to be scaled off. If your gums bleed, or if there are deeper pockets around the teeth, you may need a deeper cleaning below the gumline instead of a standard one. Dr. Muna Mohammed will explain which you need and why.
We have been caring for the Galleria and Uptown area since 2019, and our team speaks English, Spanish, and Arabic. If it has been years since your last cleaning, that is common and nothing to be embarrassed about. Say so when you book and we will take it at your pace. Patients have left us 221 Google reviews, averaging 4.9 stars.
Signs it is time to book a cleaning
- Bleeding or sore gumsGums that bleed when you brush or floss are usually inflamed, not just sensitive. It is one of the earliest warnings of gum disease.
- Breath that will not clearPersistent bad breath or a bad taste often comes from bacteria trapped under the gumline, where brushing and mouthwash cannot reach it.
- It has been a whileIf you cannot remember your last cleaning, start there. Tartar keeps building whether you feel it or not, and early decay rarely hurts.
- New sensitivity or stainingCold sensitivity, rough spots, or dark staining along the gumline are worth checking. They can point to worn enamel, tartar buildup, or a starting cavity.

Preventative Dentistry FAQs
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Most adults do well with a professional cleaning about every six months, but it is not one-size-fits-all. If you have gum disease, smoke, are pregnant, or have diabetes, your dentist may recommend coming in more often. At Snow Tree Dental in Houston, we set your interval after we see how your gums respond.
Does a teeth cleaning hurt?
For most people a routine cleaning is not painful, though it can feel scratchy or make sensitive spots twinge. If your gums are inflamed or there is heavy tartar, it can be tender, and numbing is an option. Tell your hygienist as it happens and they will adjust. You control the pace.
Does insurance cover teeth cleaning?
Most PPO dental plans treat routine cleanings and exams as preventive care, often with little or nothing out of pocket, while deep cleanings are usually covered differently. Snow Tree Dental accepts most major PPO plans and files the claim for you. Bring your card and we will check your benefits before any treatment begins.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and just under the gumline, for gums that are basically healthy. A deep cleaning, called scaling and root planing, goes further down the root to treat gum disease. It is usually done with numbing, often over more than one visit.
